Description
Fairbanks Morse Model 58T1, circa 1936
This old radio has one of the most interesting and beautiful Art Deco dial mechanisms.
The outer dials show the broadcast band (on the bottom) the first shortwave band (in green above the broadcast band) and the upper shortwave band (in red on the very top). The large slim pointer covers both hemicircles and one or the other ends of the pointer indicates what frequency you are tuned to. The very interesting inner dial rotates around and around and around as you tune so that you can keep track of exactly where you would point the dials if you wanted to return to a station again. The whole mechanism is on a precision gear reduction so that it is quite easy to tune in stations even on shortwave without using a separate fine tuning control. The knob to the upper left is the Tone/BFO control. The below it is On/Off/Volume control and to the left of it is the Band Selector switch. The knob in the upper right directly across from the Tone/BFO knob is the Tuning control.
What is really cool about this dial is the way it lights up. When the broadcast band is selected, both hemicircles and the center of the dial lights up in its beautiful colors. When shortwave band 1 is selected, the lower hemicircle and the center lights up, but when shortwave band 2 is selected, the upper hemicircle and the center lights up. It makes for a very interesting, colorful and beautiful effect. By the way, the knob on the upper left is the tone control
